Cat Rescue Groups Ease Cat Population Problems Humanely

What is Cat Rescue?

Are there stray cats in your back yard? Cat rescue groups will trap and neuter/spay as well as find homes for those cats. They also provide foster homes for abandoned and stray cats a great alternative to animal shelters

If you are planning to adopt a cat or find a home for a stray cat in your neighbourhood, the best possible option is a cat rescue group.

Cat Rescue Groups provide veterinary care, love, foster homes and adoption for strays, feral cats and kittens. They are doing a great service with dedicated groups of volunteers. I recommend them, should you have a cat needing rescue or if you want to adopt a pet cat. All the pets are screened by a veterinarian and only the adoptable animals are adopted. Potential adopters are also screened and matched with pets that would thrive in their home environment.

More Information on Cat Rescue

The cost of vaccinations and spay/neuter is included in the adoption package they provide. The package is a great value if you price out the costs of veterinary care you would pay on your own. Not only are you guaranteed a healthy, vaccinated pet, you will also help out the homeless cat population in your city. These pets are just as loving and sweet as any pet you would buy at a pet store. Some rescue groups do work with pet stores to get their cats adopted. Each rescue group is slightly different.

What better way to do a small part in the good work of these people than to give a home to a cat that desperately needs a home! Alternately, they ask for volunteers to be foster parents providing a loving environment for a cat or a kitten until they are adopted into a forever home. Sponsorship of a cat or kitten is also available. That is what I did, I sponsored the spaying for Princess, who I am unable to adopt. It was my gift to her… a forever home and no more litters of kittens. It was time for her to retire and have a forever home of her own.

While animal shelters will euthanize older cats, that are harder to place, this group works tirelessly to find the forever homes with caring people. That is heart warming to know.

My Review of Urban Cat Relief, Cat Rescue Group

My personal experience with Urban Cat Relief has been a joy. I am impressed with the care they gave Princess, who is the subject of one of my Hubs and a fixture in my life, who is also the mother of my own cat.

Urban Cat Relief also took in her last litter of six kittens and all but one is adopted. She is now in foster care awaiting adoption. I could not be more pleased!

I regret I did not know of these groups earlier because the other feral cat passed away last year. Sam could have also found a home. Sam also has a Hub dedicated to her.

Years before I had looked for such rescue groups and was unable to locate any and did not look further since my upstairs neighbours had found homes for the kittens. We shared caring for Princess and Sam. However, they tired of looking for homes for the kittens and I was moving. Necessity is the mother of invention. As the date for my move approached and I took on the full care of the new, spring litter of kittens, it was obvious the neighbours were not participating. Princess was frail and very hungry since six kittens needing milk were making her body a bag of skin and bones even though I was feeding her twice a day with all she could eat.

Help for Homes for Kittens Needed

So while I packed, I moved the kittens into my care to get them weaned from their mother and keep them safe from outside predators and get them litter trained. That was easy…they just did it naturally. It was always a treat to foster the little guys until they found homes, but this time was different. I was moving and I needed help to place these adorable little guys with great personalities! I needed help immediately.

Once I decided I needed to act I tried to search online once again determined to find some groups. This time I found a site with a list of cat rescue groups. Unfortunately, the first two groups I located didn’t have space since spring is kitten season. For awhile, I was discouraged, but one sleepless night I became determined and set about emailing requests to various rescue groups with my story and pictures of the litter. Next day the responses started to come in.

Finally a Light at the End of the Tunnel!

The first response was from Urban Cat Relief. Immediately, Suzanne, one of the wonderful people working at Urban cat Relief, reassured me that they would find a way to keep the kittens as soon as I couldn’t be able to keep them myself. She inquired about Princess and was concerned that this brave little cat needed to be spayed as soon as possible before she became pregnant again. I volunteered to sponsor Princess to be spayed at a fraction of what it would cost if I went to the vet myself. I was able to drop her off myself at the vet that Urban Cat Relief had made arrangements with. She was then sent to recover with a foster home and will be evaluated after she is healthy for adoption.

Suzanne then began working with me to arrange a time to have the kittens de-wormed, visiting me at home with another volunteer. A few days later she was able to set up a vet’s appointment for all six kittens. I went in with them and witnessed the exam and vaccinations of the whole litter. They were all healthy and of a normal weight for their age. It turned out the group was on the verge of beginning an eye infection and drops were given to me to administer to the little ones.

The kittens stayed with me while they were being treated with antibiotic drops. Suzanne asked for pictures and bios which I supplied, soon the kittens were posted on their site.

As the date for my move approached they found a foster home for the kittens which were not yet available for adoption because of their treatment with antibiotics. The vet tech from the veterinarians office volunteered to foster them for the time being until the regular foster home had space.

Happy Endings!

As of this writing, five of the kittens have been adopted and have gone to their forever homes and the mother cat Princess is recovering happy in her retirement from producing two litters every year!

As you can tell, I am totally happy with the results. I was able to move secure in the knowledge, Princess, will be taken care of, being restored to health and eventually being adopted and the kittens will all be healthy and have homes, never having to know the hardships of the life of a street cat!

Thank You, Urban Cat Relief!

Thumbs Up!

What a "Timely" and Useful Hub for me to be reading. My Sister, who's cat "Minnie", died. ( I wrote a piece on it) is now looking into a few avenues as she lives in Milford, Ct. They too have a Cat Rescue Service as well as Adoption Service. I shall pass this information on to her as well. Thanks for sharing Scribenet.

Hi b. Mailin! So glad I was able to get this Hub out for you to read!

I think the cat rescue groups are doing great work and need to get publicity, so people learn to go to them for adoptions. Also giving a loving home for a homeless cat or kitten can be very satisfying and healing.

My condolences to your sister for losing Minnie; I will go read your Hub...it is always tough to lose a pet.

Thanks for commenting!

This was a lovely story and with a happy ending too! I admire people like you that help feral cats. It is so much work and a huge responsibility to take on kittens. I am glad it was a happy ending and I hope you enjoy your new home! The Urban cat Relief seems to be a very good organization. Voted up and thanks for sharing this great story!

Hi Tina, thanks for your comments! This was a Hub I just had to write. I only fostered Princess' kittens, but the good people associated with Urban Cat Relief do this all the time and they truly love cats and are genuinely concerned with each animal. It was a truly heartwarming experience dealing with them and I wanted to give them the publicity they deserve...so if anyone in the GTA is looking for a cat or kitten, please check out their site!

Tina, it was a happy ending to be sure...it would have been heartbreaking to leave the mother cat behind facing an uncertain future.

Thanks for your vote! Maggie
