Sound Vibrations Have Structure and Patterns

Updated on November 16, 2015

Sound is invisible to the eye, so to us, it appears to have no substance or form.

You can't touch it or see it, so then sound is nothing but just noise, right? That is where the study of CYMATICS comes in. The study of "cymatics" has given visibility to sound by showing how different sounds at certain volumes produce patterns in media such as salt, sand, water, starch, etc.

When a sound is passed through a membrane with fine material on it, the material will gather in areas where there is no sound vibrations. The blank areas are the places where the sound vibrations are passing through!

What I find utterly fascinating, is the fact, that certain sound vibrations produce very specific "patterns of sound". Change the sound and the pattern is entirely different. What absolutely thrills me, is that some of the patterns produced by sound are beautiful, complex and very structured. Sound has structure and form! Amazing!

Cymatics...a science needing further study

I find the science of cymatics fascinating. I want to know more. I am aware how noise pollution just creates havoc in the modern day world. People in cities are stressed out rather than blissed out.

It seems, modern man is creating his/her own Hell on earth without so much as a conscious thought. Already we have polluted much of the earth with the residue of living, noise is certainly one of them!

The study of sound provides clues to how to correct this and live more harmonious lives within ourselves and with each other… and maybe save the planet! There are many sites devoted to bringing harmony within yourself and your environment. It has to do with resonance...being on the same wavelength so to speak. It is quite funny that we already have the correct terminology in place! We need to be in resonance with ourselves and each other as well as with nature.

One use of sound has already been discovered; "white noise" cancels out sounds by pointing the same sound back at the source!

What is of tremendous interest to me is how sound manifests into complicated and beautiful patterns as seen by experiments performed around the world by various people under controlled situations.

The patterns that emerge mimic patterns in nature!

Does the Science of Sound in Matter Have the Answers to Age-Old Questions?

This is so “Star Wars” in it’s possible application. The possibilities are there. The next quantum leap for mankind?

There is the danger of a pseudo science evolving around this type of study, but again, I am certain that is nothing new. Chemistry began with alchemy in it’s infancy stage. Chemistry has brought the modern world much in the terms of medicine and unfortunately destruction as well. There seems to be a polarity of good and evil or negative and positive if you want to view this from a purely scientific perspective. My point is, there is a beginning to each study and the beginnings are “silly" in many ways, but the questions lead to better questions and the refining of science happens.

Certain sounds are not harmonious and will disintegrate patterns at certain frequencies and create beautiful complicated patterns at others. The patterns are endless and beautiful ranging from simple designs to the most intricate and awe inspiring examples man has ever been able to create by hand!

Everything in the modern environment emits sound…traffic, your fridge, your dog, the clock ticking on the mantle, the lawn mower, the snow blower, noisy neighbours and on and on. Some sounds are pleasing and relaxing; like music you enjoy, the laughter of babies, the sound of a babbling brook, for instance. Other sounds drive you around the bend; these might be more specific to you, but universal annoying sounds are a dentists drill, shrill sirens, barking dogs to name a few. Ever wonder why? The answer most likely is the frequency and pitch of the sound.

Ancient spiritual practices have worked with sound and studied it. They may have much to offer in the realm of quieting our minds and refreshing our psyche from the constant bombardment of noise in our environment. Meditation is part of this practice and I have no knowledge of what is good and what is sham, but certainly there must be a body of knowledge that is more advanced that could help modern man to see more clearly the importance of all of us in creating beauty rather than plotting to gain advantage or power from one another. It is like the tree leaves destroying the roots to gain mastery of the tree. We may all indeed be interconnected and the sooner man realises that the sooner we would evolve into a harmonious “whole”.

Then again, it could just be creation at it’s own rate of evolution. Trees live and die. Diseases happen. Species emerge and die off. Creation may just be impersonal, resonating with the frequencies of the universe. Are we a blip on the radar of the universe? A manifestation of sound creating a pattern for awhile , eventually annihilating everything we know to be manifested again in some other pattern of frequencies in the universe? What does it make of life on earth? How does science of sound and it's patterns relate to us?

Though the word "cymatics" was coined by Dr. Hans Jenny, a Swiss scientist, who began work in the 1950’s,on the study of sound wave phenomena; the study of the effect of sound on solid matter has been documented previously by German physicist and acoustician, Ernst Chaldini in the 18th century. The physics of sound goes even further back in history.

Ancient spiritual practices already were aware of the profound impact sound waves can have on the human body both spiritually and physically. It is of great importance that we all study this phenomena, because it is to our advantage to discover why these vibrations exist, what the patterns mean to us as far as our health and well being and ultimately even to describe “what “ we are in the primordial soup and even if there is a greater intelligence behind this? In the beginning was the word of God? Is that not referring to a “sound”? A word definitely is a sound!

Some videos ...for food for thought...

I have included some videos.

  • There are three "You Tube" clips describing as well as showing how sound creates these amazing patterns.
  • Tibetan Singing Bowls.

I hope you enjoy some of these!
