A List of Things To Do on a Winter Day

This time of year just seems to drag. The Christmas cookies are long gone, The New Year’s hangovers a distant memory. Now when we look in the mirror, we are five pounds heavier and just getting to be another year older. Ho-hum!

January and February are my least favorite months in the year. By now, the wonder of a fresh blanket of pristine, white snow, which was gratefully acknowledged, at Christmas-time has become that "&%!?!" snow that needs shovelling once again!

My lists and links follow...

Kids like Snow Days!

Now if I was "school-age", I could be happy, for perhaps, a "snow-day" from school, but unless one lives in the Yukon (18 feet of snow today) or perhaps Newfoundland...where it is common to have to dig out your house every winter day...that does not happen in the rest of Canada so much. Right kids? You know...like when you are just praying for that snow that is too much to go to school...it only snows enough to make it a bother, but you gotta go to school anyway! Grrr.

The list is just a little further...

My List of "Boredom Busters"

So what does one do for entertainment when one is stuck at home, bored with day-time television,,(I have never been a fan of soap operas)... (sorry)... That is my dilema.

Here are some of my suggestions for passing a snowy and dark afternoon. Before you know it ; it will be dark and you have to burrow back into bed and hibernate until tomorrow:

  1. Find a good book to read; (one of my recommendations "The Glass Castle"...gritty; you will be glad for your own comfy home and boredom!
  2. Turn off the television and enjoy some music; bust a few dance moves.
  3. Do some baking...bread especially; so satisfying...cookies fattening, but what the "H"!
  4. Research a new hobby.
  5. Have a spa day at home on a weekend. Right in the middle of the day!
  6. Find an interactive site to play Sudoko or do a puzzle, etc.
  7. Clean out a closet...yikes. (whatever rocks your boat)
  8. Get dressed up for no reason and go out to eat at your favorite restaurant.
  9. If you have a movie collection, watch an old favorite once again ( I have watched Dr, Zhivago like a million times!). My "more modern" favorites: "Nacho Libre" and soon to be favorite.. the "new version of the "Arthur" movie...I like 'em silly!
  10. If all else fails...get out the chips and bon-bons and sit in front of the tube and get into a soap opera...Oh well

Winter will be over soon enough and the spring blossoms will be peaking through the melting patches of snow... and then winter will just be a distant memory...I wish!

I totally relate to what you say; trying to fight off boredom and the winter blues has always been a challenge. So far, I've finished a book I borrowed from a library and am about to finish a second one which I bought from a book fair, AND my first attempt EVER...I'm knitting a scarf for my son! So far I haven't been terribly bored due to these tactics, but as you already know, we still have several more weeks of winter! ARRGGH!

I just saw the movie "The Descendants" and am looking forward to the Grammy's and the Oscar's, which add a little color to the cold and long winter nights. Also did quite a bit of cleaning out drawers over Christmas break. Looks like I'm already doing what you've advised:) Hope we both make it through the winter safe and sound! Thanks for a fun hub!

Hi mtkomori! You are on top of it! I think I want to see "The Descendants" as well and of course the Oscars are somehing to look forward to ! Reading has always been my favourite pastime; winter just gives me a great excuse for indulging!

Haven't attempted the knitting yet, but discovered the site ravelry.com with all sorts of free patterns...awesome for looking at...they ask you to join...but they ask for minimal info.

Thanks for stopping by and offering your solutions to boredom...before we know it winter will have left! Cheers!

I love your boredom busters! I especially liked, “turn off the television...” (And I also wonder why people find soap operas so entertaining…oh well; I guess that’s just me.)

I love the snow, as long as we don’t have to drive in it. Bitter cold weather with gray skies and barren trees without even just a tad bit of snow seems so out of place…like Mother Nature arriving at wedding wearing black.

Up and interesting. :-)

Hi Genna! I definitely love the snow as far as change of seasons go and it is always welcome when it covers the gray/brown of early winter. It is also gorgeous as in the pictures I took of snow-laden trees.

However, it makes me house-bound more than in summer and then it is time to break-out all those activities put off all summer because I was out enjoying nature every single day!

Thanks for your comments! Cheers!

To curl up with a Good Book and some Hot Tea, would be my choice...when I was Younger I Loved to Dance to anything on the Radio that was Danceable. I was NEVER a SNOW PERSON...a walk in the cold gave me HIVES...So now (Don't KILL ME) I'm in Florida, Scribenet, and guess what? We're having a COLD SPELL! They think anything under 50 or less it COLD!

You have my Sympathy dear Friend, wish you could be here too! But you have written some Excellent Ideas, Good Hub!

Hi B.Malin! LOL...the cold gives you hives! So funnny that you are having a cold spell (in Florida ;) ) Those pictures above were taken yesterday, but that is nothing to what Alaska is experiencing in snowfall...don't ever go there...you would have hives upon hives!

Hey, I complain about the weather, but it is a very Canadian thing to do! I am fine right now...layered as I am, in fleece and wool socks...lol...dreaming about Florida and it's cold spell.

Thanks for your funny comment and hope you get out of the deep freeze soon (wink, wink) Cheers!

Hi Scribenet ... despite being an old fogey I love snow. But then I'm in the UK and we don't do snow Canadian-style ... or at least not often.

This year so far we have not had snow and I'm not happy. So I've been catching up with the house and garden renovations instead, as well as reading a huge pile of books from the library. Can't watch TV ... too boring.

To see what a different winter we're having see http://thisisangiesblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/what-

Hi Angie! Aw..no snow? Gotta have snow; even though I complain to beat the band! Presently, there is a cold snap here (-18 drgrees celsius and wind makes it colder). Maybe, it is the cold, I resent...and the short daylight hours!

Here is hoping some of this snow makes it's way over the pond to you! I am going over to check your link! Thanks for commenting! Cheers!
